Raja Ravi Varma is considered one of the greatest artists from India. A royal by birth, he was a prolific painter and used mythological stories as the themes for his paintings, in addition to painting models from real life.
His art lives on in the form of religious imagery of gods and godesses. If you have a mental picture of what an Indian god looks like, there is a good chance it's inspired by one of Raja Ravi Varma's paintings.
